I had one of those coil-type epilators back in the eighties, which was a torture device, to put it simply. I gave up on it after a few months and went back to shaving. Fast forward a couple of decades, to when the Remington EP1000 shows up in my gold box. I was a little nervous about ordering it, given my past experience, but was won over by the positive reviews. Wow, am I glad I did! This thing causes, oh, a little mild discomfort, but nothing worse than that. It's certainly less painful than waxing. The design is such that it can't grab more than two or three hairs at a time; you're never going to be pulling out great tufts all at once, like my old inquisition-style coil did. Even better, you can use the EP1000 on your face. Warning to the younger women out there: After you pass 40, you'll learn about chin hairs. 'Nuff said. I've been using the EP1000 a couple of times a week for over a month now, and my legs are smooth and silky, my chin is, er, youthful, and I'm not cringing in pain! Bravo to these second-generation epilators; I'll never go back to the razor now.

I purchased this item strictly to use on my upper lip and chin. I normally wax, and even still got a little top layer of skin yanked off. (which turned into a nasty little scab as it healed)I also still had to go back over with tweezers for those strays. I threw out my wax as soon as I used this! It's soo fast and easy. The pain is minimal(when you first start)to nothing(after you've started). Especially if you're used to waxing. And there were NO strays, even the shortest hairs were gone. I personally had no irritation. This thing does a better job by far than any wax, even at a salon. I'm so excited that I'm trying to work up the nerve to do my legs and "other areas", I've never waxed anywhere else though, that's the only reason I'm a little hesitant. I've never tried an epilator before and I'm sooo glad I got this! Although I'm a little mad at myself for not getting one sooner!

I was very pleased with this product and its ability to remove hair. I read through several of the other reviews before purchasing, and I am not surprised that some people found it painful - it is, if you've never used an epilator before. But as far as I can tell, all epilators are uncomfortable in the beginning. I had been using a European one for 3 years before getting this one because I needed one that ran on US voltage. The results are great - better than what I get with my European one that cost 3 times more. However, this one is a little scary because the "blades" rotate very, very fast and make a lot of noise. I wasn't so sure about putting it up to my skin at first, but once you take the plunge it's fine. I would say that one disadvantage is that it only has 1 speed, whereas others have 2 speeds. The one big drawback is that it does have the tendency to catch skin. I was pinched twice while using it in the bikini area. I think you have to be careful over any area with loose skin - make sure to pull the skin taut and watch where you are going. It is freaky when it catches the skin but the motor stops automatically so it doesn't really hurt, just pinches a little. Still, I would be careful.
